Jack Gruber

 

Born to two musicians in Washington DC’s thriving Jazz scene, Jack Gruber took up piano at the age of 8 and quickly developed a passion for improvised music. He attended  Paul Carr’s acclaimed Jazz Academy of Music, and in high school, and had the honor of being selected for the sole piano chair of the Maryland All State Jazz Band.

Gruber's musical journey continued at The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, where he received his BFA, and later at the Manhattan School of Music, where he earned a Master’s degree. Throughout his journey, he had the opportunity to study under esteemed musicians including Allyn Johnson, Bruce Barth, Taylor Eigsti, Jeremy Manasia, Phil Markowitz, Jaleel Shaw, Reggie Workman, and George Cables.

During his time at The New School, Gruber was selected to represent the institution, performing around New York City on their behalf and appearing in multiple advertising campaigns for the school.

Since completing his formal education, Gruber has performed alongside numerous prominent artists, such as Jim Cammack (bassist for Ahmed Jamal),  Herb Scott, Erena Terakubo, Malik Washington, William Ledbetter, Julian Berkowitz, Ted Baker, Justin Mendez, Zara Larrson, and Qaasim Middleton (American Idol finalist). His performances have taken him to a variety of  venues and festivals, including The Warner Theatre, Union Stage, Keystone Korner, Bethesda Blues and Jazz, Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival, Westminster Church, Fat Cat, Minton’s, Twins Jazz, Afro-Punk, 55 bar, Strathmore Concert Hall, the Silver Spring Jazz Festival, and the Downbeat DC Jazz Festival. 

As a bandleader, Gruber has performed his original compositions at venues such as Keystone Korner, Vic's Jazz Loft, Manhattan School of Music, Mr. Henry's, and Twins Jazz. His music is a blend of jazz and pop influences, and he has written and performed it in various contexts – from trio and quartet to string quartet and full orchestra. Currently working toward his debut album, Gruber believes to his core in music’s ability to connect with others and remains deeply committed to expressing his humanity through his art.
